Accesses to 84th St. slated for closure

Several access points to 84 St., at the boundary between the MD of Rocky View and the northeast side of the City of Calgary, will be permanently closed in July, as construction of a portion of the Northeast Stoney Trail Ring Road project progresses.

The 21-km-long road runs from its junction at Deerfoot Trail to 17 Ave. S.E.

Access points at Country Hills Blvd, McKnight Blvd. and 16 Ave. will be closed, with alternate access routes being provided along 100 Street (Rge. Rd. 285).

From Country Hills Blvd., access to 84 St., north and south will be via newly constructed “jug handles” 500 metres east of 84 St.

From McKnight Blvd., access to 84 St. will be accomplished by driving east to 100 Street, north to 80 Ave., and then west to 84 St.

Access to 84 St. to the south from McKnight Blvd. will be accomplished by driving east to 100 St. south to 32 Ave. and then west to 84 St.

Access to 84 St. to the north from 16 Ave. will be accomplished by driving east to 100 St.

Access to 84 St. in direction south from 16 Ave. will be accomplished by driving east to 100 St., then south to 17 Ave. and then west to 84 St.

Road improvements have taken place over the last year and will be complete prior to the closures along 84 St., including paving of 100 St. between Country Hills Blvd. and McKnight Blvd. A new portion of 32 Avenue N.E. will also be paved between 100 St. and 84 St.

Intersection improvements and new signals will be installed at the intersection of 100 St. and 16 Ave., as well as at the intersection of 84 St. and 17 Ave.

Once 84 St. is closed, an emergency access route off of 16 Ave. will be provided for emergency vehicles only.

The design of the road will meet national safety standards. Motorists will be driving on the northeast leg of Calgary’s ring road by the fall of 2009.
