Volunteer’s effort boosts fundraiserThis year's Betty’s Run has raised just over half of a million dollars that will go to help those afflicted with ALS.
That amount increased to over $3 million total contributions raised over the past 12 years, of which $1 million has gone straight to research for ALS.
Kevin O’Keefe, named ambassador for this year’s event, was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and wanted to organize "Kevin's Kickoff to Betty's Run" by riding a bike from Rockyford, to reach Calgary in time for the June 8 run.
O’Keefe had his two children as team mates along the ride.
"I am still pretty fit despite having ALS," said O’Keefe.
"I did not want to show up and make a speech for the walk and go home."
Kevin's Ride for Betty brought awareness to the walk and helped raise funds for ALS.
"Value your health, live your life to the fullest and help those that have less than yourself," said O’Keefe.
The 2008 Betty's Run for ALS raised over $525, 000, of which 60 per cent will contribute to the support of Albertans living with ALS, while the remaining 40 per cent supports research.
